The rewards from last weekend's dominating win over Montana piled up for the Bobcat football program on Monday. Three Bobcats grabbed at least a share of all three Big Sky Conference Player of the Week awards, and another player earned national player of the week honors. In addition, Montana State quarterback Travis Lulay maintained his position as one of Division I-AA's top players by making the final list of 16 semifinalists for the Payton Trophy.
Linebacker Nick Marudas earned the league's Co-Defensive Player of the Week award, Evin Groves grabbed offensive honors, and kicker Jeff Hastings earned Special Teams mention for their work in MSU's 16-6 win over Montana last week.
Marudas, a senior from Bozeman, had six tackles, two for a loss, and two sacks in MSU's dominant defensive performance. The 'Cats held UM to just 220 yards of total offense and one touchdown. Marudas' first sack set up a Bobcat interception two plays later. He also helped break up a crucial two-point conversion. This is his second POW award this season. He shares the award with Weber State's Shane Barkdull.
Groves, a redshirt freshman running back, ran for a career-high 143 yards and 35 carries, scoring the only Bobcat touchdown. His rushing output is the most ever by a freshman in the 105-year old rivalry. Groves scored on a three-yard run in the first quarter, and also caught one pass for 12 yards. This is his first such award.
Hastings provided most of MSU's scoring Saturday, become only the third player in to hit three field goals in a Cat-Griz game. His 16 field goals this season is a Bobcat record. His performance also landed him The Sports Network Special Teams Player of the Week award.
Another Bobcat earned national honors for his work against Montana. Don Hansen's Football Gazette named Jeff Bolton its I-AA Lineman of the Week, an honor Bolton also earned for his work the week before. Bolton graded out at 99% by the Bobcat coaches in MSU's domination of Montana. Bolton and the offensive line helped Groves roll for 143 rushing yards.
