NEXT UP: The Bobcats will face Portland State, Friday, Nov. 4 at 8 p.m. (MST) in the Stott Center. MSU will conclude its trip with a stop in Cheney, Wash, when they face Eastern Washington on Saturday at 8 p.m. on Reese Court. Montana State concludes its regular season slate Nov. 11-12 in Shroyer Gym.
THAT WAS THE WEEK THAT WAS: The Bobcats won two matches last weekend, one in league action and the other in non-conference play. MSU opened with a 28-30, 30-28, 30-25, 30-22 win over intra-state rival Montana in Missoula. Kim Stonehouse recorded a career-high 24 kills, while adding 16 digs. Also in double-digit kills for the Bobcats were Meggie Malyurek and Raelene Purnell with 18 and 13 kills, respectively. Junior libero Kandice Kelly recorded a team-high 24 digs, while sophomore walkon Patti Anderson chipped in a match-high five blocks and three aces. Stonehouse and Malyurek also paced the Bobcats in a 30-22, 30-25, 30-27 win over North Dakota State on Saturday. The outside hitting duo combined for 23 kills and 25 digs, while senior middle blocker Megan Zanto added a team-high four blocks.
THE SCOUTING REPORT: Portland State is 18-6 overall and 8-3 in Big Sky Conference. The Vikings are perhaps the surprise of the Big Sky this season. Prior to losing to Sacramento State last Saturday, the Vikings had rattled off eight straight conference wins. On the season, PSU has been led by Jessica Brodie and Jessica Vanzant, who average 4.34 and 3.70 kills, respectively. Eastern Washington is 17-8 overall and 7-4 in Big Sky action. The Eagles are led by Lizzy Mellor and Ashley Jensen, who average 4.08 and 3.03 kills.
TOUGH AS NAILS: The Bobcats have played the toughest schedule in the Big Sky Conference this season, and maybe one of the hardest in the nation, as well. Five of MSU’s losses have come at the hands of teams ranked in the CSTV/AVCA Division I Coaches Top 25 poll. Looking at this week’s poll, the ‘Cats have played #2 Washington, #10 Wisconsin, #12 Brigham Young, #13 Missouri and #18 California.
‘CAT OF THE WEEK: Junior outside hitter Kim Stonehouse was named Montana State’s Player of the Week for her efforts against Montana and North Dakota State. Stonehouse played an instrumental role in MSU’s win over the Grizzlies with a career-high 24 kills. For the match, she averaged 6.00 kills and 4.00 digs, while hitting .279 from the field. In non-conference action, she averaged 4.33 kills and 4.67 digs, while hitting .407 from the floor. On the weekend, Stonhouse averaged 5.29 kills and 4.29 digs, while hitting a respectable .318. She also added five aces in the two matches.
