Bobcat Spikers Prepare for Big Sky Tourney

NEXT UP: The Montana State volleyball team will be making its tenth straight Big Sky Conference tournament appearance this week in Sacramento, Calif. The Bobcats earned the No. 4 seed and will meet No. 5 seed Idaho State on Thursday, Nov. 17 at 8:30 p.m. (MST) in Hornet Gym. The other first-round match features #3 Eastern Washington and #6 Weber State. If the Bobcats advance to the semifinals, they’ll face #1 Sacramento State at 8:30 p.m., while #2 Portland State will play the highest remaining seed. The championship match is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 19 at 8 p.m. All matches at this year’s tournament will be broadcast at www.hornetsports.com.
THAT WAS THE WEEK THAT WAS: The Bobcats swept its final home series of the regular-season. MSU opened play with a 23-30, 30-23, 30-16, 30-16 win over Idaho State. Four Bobcat players reached double-figure kills, led by Kim Stonehouse 14, Meggie Malyurek 13, Megan Zanto 12 and Laura Viren 12. Five Montana State players reached double-digit digs, paced by Kandice Kelly 17, Meggie Malyurek 17, Brittni Sesler 15, Patti Anderson 14 and Viren 10. Montana State ended the weekend with a 30-26, 30-16, 30-28 victory over Weber State. Viren led MSU with a career-high 13 kills, while Malyurek and Zanto added 11, apiece. Kelly guided the Bobcats with a match-high 20 digs, while Malyurek and Anderson added 15 and 10, respectively.
ALL-CONFERENCE ACCOLADES: Meggie Malyurek, Megan Zanto and Kim Stonehouse all garnered Big Sky Conference second-team accolades for their efforts this fall. The three second-team honors is the most in MSU history. Zanto led the Bobcats in hitting percentage and blocking, while Stonehouse is first in kills, second in service aces and third in digs. Malyurek led MSU in aces, and ranked second in kills and digs.
TOUGH AS NAILS: The Bobcats have played the toughest schedule in the Big Sky, and perhaps, one of the hardest in the nation. Five of MSU’s losses have come at the hands of teams ranked in the CSTV/AVCA Division I Coaches Top 25 poll. Looking at this week’s poll, the ‘Cats have played #3 Washington, #11 Missouri, #13 California, #15 Wisconsin and #22 Brigham Young.
BIG SKY PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Co-Big Sky Player of the Week Megan Zanto had a huge weekend for the Bobcats in her final appearance in Shroyer Gym. The 6-foot-3 middle blocker from Helena, averaged 3.29 kills, 1.57 digs and 1.14 blocks, while hitting .388 from the field. Zanto had her best match of the weekend aginst Weber State, collecting 11 kills (no errors), a .550 attack mark, five digs, three blocks and an ace. Against Idaho State, she recorded 12 kills, six digs, five blocks and two service aces, while hitting .276 from the floor.
