Bobcats Fall to Eastern

Eastern Washington exploded for 35 consecutive points after the middle of the second quarter, racing past MSU 35-14 in Woodward Stadium.
While the stats ended close -- 350 yards of total offense for Eastern 380 for the 'Cats -- the Eagles handed MSU a three-touchdown loss, spurred a pair of late second-quarter touchdowns.
"Hats off to Eastern," said MSU coach Mike Kramer. "They outplayed us. Our receivers did not win battles, and that's what you have to do across the field. That's the tale of the tape."
Evin Groves gave the Bobcats their only lead, a 7-0 margin with 9:11 to play in the second quarter. On the next possession, facing a third-and-eight, the Bobcats allowed EWU quarterback Erik Meyer to scramble for 19 yards and a first down. Eastern scored seven plays later, and after a Bobcat three-and-out marched 62 yards for a lead they wouldn't surrender.
"Erik's ability to run the ball against our man-to-man coverage, and our inability to contain him with our defensive line, was countenance for them," Kramer said. "Eastern did a nice job controlling our offense."
Travis Lulay threw for 237 yards and a touchdown, and rushed for another 72. Meyer threw for 206 yards and a pair of scoring strikes, but left the game with a head injury in the third quarter. He also ran for 48 yards and caught a pass for 11 yards.
Montana State hosts Montana next week for a share of the Big Sky Conference Championship.
