Bobcat Spikers Fall Short

“We need to regain our identity,” said MSU head coach Miya Malauulu. “In both matches this weekend we uncharacteristically went absent from our system. It always seemed that some part of us was broken. Now, we need to get in the gym and fix it.”
Portland State (14-5, 4-2) cruised to two easy victories to open the match, out-hitting the Bobcats .267 to .133. In the third game, Montana State (8-10, 2-3) got out to a quick 15-6 advantage and held off a late Viking rally, winning on a Megan Zanto kill.
“We found some energy and responded well following the first two games,” Malauulu said. “However, we had to climb out of a pretty big hole.”
MSU broke away from a 14-13 lead in the fourth stanza with a 9-3 run and won the game on a Meggie Malyurek ace.
In the final game, PSU took an early 5-2 advantage, before the Bobcats went ahead 7-6 on a Raelene Purnell and Kami Buettner block. The Vikings answered with a 6-2 run to take a 12-9 advantage.
MSU scored three straight points to tie the game at 12-all. With the game knotted at 13, a Bobcat hitting error and a Lindsey Steele kill gave the Vikings the match.
Montana State was led by Zanto and Kim Stonehouse with 16 kills apiece, while Malyurek added 12. Malyurek hit the 1000-kill plateau, making her the 14th Bobcat to accomplish the feat.
Libero Kandice Kelly also hit a milestone, going over the 1,000-dig mark. Kelly is the fastest to 1,000 digs in the history of the Bobcat program. The Roundup native notched a team-high 20 digs against the Vikings.
Portland State was paced by Jessica Brodie with 18 kills and 23 digs.
MSU will play at Weber State on Friday night.
