HOME SWEET HOME: The Montana State volleyball team will continue its three-match homestand when they host Eastern Washington and Portland State on the State Farm Sports Court in Shroyer Gym. The Bobcats will open the weekend, Friday, Oct. 7 against Eastern Washington at 7 p.m. MSU will conclude its weekend play against Portland State, Saturday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m.
TAKING A LOOK BACK: Montana State played only one match over the weekend, downing Montana 30-24, 30-19, 30-27 in front of a sold out (2,117) Shroyer Gym. Three Bobcat players reached double-figure kill totals, led by Kim Stonehouse with 12 winners, while Meggie Malyurek and Megan Zanto added 11 and ten kills, respectively. Sophomore Raelene Purnell received her first start as a middle blocker and recorded eight kills, a .350 attack mark and two blocks. Libero Kandice Kelly recorded a team-high 15 digs, while freshman setter Brittni Sesler dished out 40 assists and added three aces and six digs. Zanto paced all players at the net with six blocks.
THE SCOUTING REPORT: Eastern Washington is 10-5 overall and 2-2 in Big Sky Conference action. Last weekend, the Eagles split a pair of home matches, defeating Northern Arizona 3-0, before losing in three games to defending Big Sky champion Sacramento State. Ashley Jensen paced EWU over the weekend hitting .433, while averaging 3.7 kills per game. On the season, Eastern Washington has been paced by senior Lizzy Mellor, who is averaging 3.63 kills and 2.24 digs per game. Portland State is 12-5 overall and 2-2 in league play. The Vikings will face Montana on Friday night, before traveling to Bozeman. PSU is off to one of its best starts as part of the Big Sky Conference. Last weekend, the Vikings knocked off defending league champion Sacramento State in a hard fought 3-2 decision, before dispatching Northern Arizona in three games. On the year, PSU has been led by Jessica Brodie and Jesssica Vanzant, who average 4.40 and 3.52 kills, respectively. Vanzant, a 6-foot-2 native of Tucson, Ariz., was the Big Sky’s Player of the Week, after averaging 5.12 kills and hitting .304 from the field.
TOUGH AS NAILS: The Bobcats have perhaps the toughest schedule in the Big Sky Conference this season, and maybe one of the hardest in the nation, as well. Five of MSU’s losses have come at the hands of teams ranked in the CSTV/AVCA Division I Coaches Top 25 poll. Looking at this week’s poll, the ‘Cats have played #2 Washington, #7 Missouri, #8 Wisconsin, #13 California and #16 BYU.
‘CAT OF THE WEEK: Senior Megan Zanto led the Bobcats to a 3-0 win over intra-state rival Montana. The 6-foot-3 native of Helena, Mont. knocked down ten kills, while hitting .562 from the floor. In addition, she added a match-high six blocks and had four digs.
