Three Bobcat Harriers Garner All Conference Honors

Ogden, UT— Juniors Tony Bachman and Kurt Michels ran a great race for the Montana State Bobcats at the 2005 Big Sky Cross Country Championships, finishing fourth and eighth respectively. Bachman ran 8,000-meter championship race with a time of 25:14.8. Michels crossed the finish line 21 seconds later to claim eighth place with a time of 25:35.
As a team, the Bobcats finished fifth with a total of 110 points. This trailed Eastern Washington’s 100 points, Idaho State (68), Weber State (63), and team champions Northern Arizona. The Bobcat’s were followed by University of Montana (123), Sacramento State (183), and Portland State (183).
Devin McDowell was the third Bobcat to cross the finish line, taking 24th place with a time of 26:41.9. Also scoring points for the Bobcats were Graydon Curry (34th, 27:11.2) and Michael Kapus(40th, 27:25.8).
Head coach Dale Kennedy was proud of his top runners’ performances, and noted the solid performances by the men’s team in a race of this magnitude. “This was the best team race of the year. Everybody was clicking on all cylinders.”
At the midway point of the race, Tony Bachman appeared to be in control or securing a runner-up finish, however, he was in a pack of about three other runners who were all capable of finishing second.
Fifty-two runners competed in the men’s race, which featured eight teams. The Bobcats last won the Big Sky Championships in 2002.
On the women’s side, thirteenth-ranked Northern Arizona won the team competition (5,000 meters). The Lumberjacks finished with 27 points and were followed closely by Weber State’s 40 points, University of Montana (94) and the Bobcat’s (101). The Bobcat’s were followed by Eastern Washington (115), Idaho State (155), Portland State (162), and Sacramento State (212).
Johanna Nilsson of Northern Arizona won the women’s race in a time of 17:28.7.
The Bobcat’s finished in fourth place, scoring 101 points. Elizabeth Driscoll paced the women, finishing in 10th place with a time of 18:48.3. She was followed closely by teammate’s Jayme Larson, who took 14th place (18:59.7) and Caroline Gottschalk who placed 15th (19:00.0).
“I thought the women ran a really well race today,” said Kennedy. “That was the best that we’ve run all year.”
Also scoring points for the Bobcats were Kayla Larson (24th, 19:22.6) and Marilee Woyth (38th, 19:53.8).
The Bobcats will next be in action at the NCAA Mountain Regional in Provo, Utah. The meet is scheduled to take place on Nov. 12 at 10 a.m.
