Montana State survived five turnovers and a two-to-one possession time disadvantage, riding quarterback Travis Lulay's 366 yards of total offense to beat Northern Arizona 29-22 in Bozeman on Saturday.
Lulay followed a familiar script, leading the Bobcats on a seven-play, 71-yard scoring drive, capped by an eight-yard pass to Justin Domineck with 2:48 to play. Lulay threw for 257 yards and three touchdowns on the afternoon, stopping a furious NAU second-half comeback.
"My hat is really off to Jerome (Souers) and his players," Kramer said. "They played very well, especially in the second half. They showed all kinds of poise and determination. Jason Murrietta played extremely well, and his receivers did, too. Kory Mahr is a big, rangy kid who really gets up in the air and catches the ball."
Montana State jumped out to a 22-0 halftime lead. Jeff Hastings nailed his first two field goal tries, tying a school record for six consecutive field goals made, and Rick Gatewood and Michael Bass each caught TD passes from Lulay.
In spite of the large lead, Kramer said his discomfort began building before halftime. "The defense really played well for a quarter-and-a-half," he said, "but I could feel it slipping away late in the first half. Then in the second half we played like we were trick-or-treaters afraid of the dark."
Murrietta got NAU on the board with 6:08 to play in the third quarter, connecting with Jason Zarate on a 10-yard scoring strike. Then Mahr caught a three-yarder, and Josh Sayles scored on a one-yard run. Alex Watson's two-point conversion tied the score at 22 with 4:08 to play, leading to Lulay's game-winning drive.
"We have a lot of confidence in those situations," Lulay said. "We've been through it a lot of times, especially in this stadium. We know how to handle it."
