Montana State Cross Country Teams Head to Big Sky Championships
10/27/2005 12:00:00 AM | Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country, Cross Country
The women’s five-kilometer event will begin at 10:30 a.m., followed by the men’s eight-kilometer race at 11:15 a.m.
According to MSU head coach Dale Kennedy, the men’s race should come down to Northern Arizona and Weber State, while Idaho State is tabbed third. A battle for the next three spots will be between MSU, Montana and Eastern Washington.
The Bobcats will be paced by junior Tony Bachmann and Utah transfer Kurt Michels. Bachmann finished eighth at last year’s Big Sky meet to garner all-conference accolades.
“To stay in the top half of the Big Sky we’ll need to have five guys clicking on all cylinders,” Kennedy said. “We’re certainly capable of having that happen. We haven’t had a meet this season where we have had five running really well, but we do have a couple of guys coming off solid performances at the Pre-Nationals, and hopefully, that will carry over into Saturday’s race.”
Northern Arizona is the prohibitive favorite for the women’s team title, while Weber State will also be ahead of the pack. MSU, Montana, Eastern Washington and Idaho State will battle for the third spot.
“We’re running four solid kids at the top, but where we get into trouble is in the fifth position,” Kennedy said. “We’ll need a big performance from someone at No. 5 to have a good day as a team.
“Individually, we’ll try to get someone within the top ten and earn all-conference honors, Kennedy added.”
Elisabeth Driscoll paced the Bobcats last season, placing sixth overall at the Big Sky meet. Also among MSU’s top four will be Caroline Gottschalk and Jayme and Kayla Larson.
