'Cat Spikers head to Missoula, Host NDSU

TAKING A LOOK BACK: The Bobcats split a pair of league matches in Shroyer Gym, last weekend. Montana State opened the weekend with a 33-31, 30-22, 30-23 win over Northern Arizona. Junior Raelene Purnell paced the Bobcats with a career-high 14 kills, while adding a .300 attack mark and a match-high six blocks. Megan Zanto also recorded double-digits with 11 kills, while hitting .391 from the field. On Saturday, two-time defending Big Sky champion Sacramento State cruised to a 30-15, 30-19, 30-17 win over the Bobcats. In the loss, MSU was led by Angela Wiebe with seven kills and five blocks. Libero Kanice Kelly recorded a team-high 20 digs.
THE SCOUTING REPORT: Montana is 12-11 overall and 2-7 in Big Sky Conference action. Earlier this season, the Bobcats handed the Grizzlies a 30-24, 30-19, 30-27 setback in Shroyer Gym. Last week, Montana dropped a 3-0 decision to Sacramento State, before defeating Northern Arizona 3-1 to remain in the hunt for a Big Sky tournament bid. The Grizzlies were paced by Emily Sakis, who recorded 16 kills, a .481 attack mark and four blocks against No. Arizona. Junior Claudia Houle posted double-doubles in both matches last weekend. On the year, Houle has led UM, averaging 4.43 kills and 4.35 digs per game. Setter Diana Thompson is dishing out 11.89 assists per game, while Jessica Petersen and EvaLyn Whitehead lead the Griz at the net, averaging .83 blocks. North Dakota State is 1-24 overall competing as a NCAA Division I Independent. The Bison’s lone victory came over Centenary on Sept. 24. NDSU and MSU have never met on the volleyball court. The Bison have been paced this season by Kelly Lopez, who is averaging 2.81 kills and 1.77 digs.
TOUGH AS NAILS: The Bobcats have played the toughest schedule in the Big Sky Conference this season, and maybe one of the hardest in the nation, as well. Five of MSU’s losses have come at the hands of teams ranked in the CSTV/AVCA Division I Coaches Top 25 poll. Looking at this week’s poll, the ‘Cats have played #2 Washington, #8 Missouri, #11 Wisconsin, #13 Brigham Young and #15 California.
‘CAT OF THE WEEK: For the second straight week, junior Raelene Purnell was named Montana State Player of the Week for her effort over the weekend. The native of Red Deer, Alberta, recorded a career-high 14 kills in MSU’s win over Northern Arizona. On the weekend, Purnell averaged 3.33 kills and 1.50 blocks per game, including six blocks against the Lumberjacks.
