Ja'Ron Jefferson scored 25 points and Marvin Moss added 14 to lead the Montana State basketball team in its first public scrimmage of the fall.
Jefferson hit 10 of his 16 shots, including 5-for-7 on three-point tries, to pace the Bobcats. Moss was 6-for-10 from the field, while junior college transfer Derrick Edmonds was 7-for-10 for 18 points.
While he was pleased with the play of veterans such as Moss and Jefferson, Montana State coach Mick Durham had his eye trained on Edmonds and Indiana State transfer Ted Morris, who redshirted last season. "I thought those two new guys played well," Durham said. "Derrick Edmonds did what we need him to do, he hit open shots. Ted Morris gives us a nice presence inside."
Mixing and matching stood as the order of the day during MSU's first scrimmage, Durham said. "We looked at a few different combinations. We needed to get ourselves on video. I also wanted to see where we were in conditioning for a 30-minute scrimmage, and I thought we looked alright in that area. I thought the defense showed some pretty good things at times."
Saturday's scrimmage provides Durham and his staff a good jumping off point, he said. "At this point of the preseason we have a lot of work to do," he said. "This gives us a good start."
