Springing in the Fall

On a beautiful autumn afternoon in Bobcat Stadium, Mike Kramer peeked ahead at next spring.
Kramer put his program's redshirts and reserves through an 80-play scrimmage on Friday, with true freshman running back Isaiah Taito rushed for 91 yards on 23 carries and Mike Van Gorden and Tyler Lulay combined for 144 yards on 12 catches to lead the offense. Cornerback Michael Wright broke up two passes and intercepted another, while Dane Fletcher had two tackles-for-loss to pace the defense.
"That was great fun," Kramer said. "An 80-play scrimmage in the middle of the fall season is unprecedented in our program, but I thought it was tremendous."
Quarterbacks Cory Carpenter and Rick Coppack have watched Travis Lulay pile up spectacular numbers throughout his senior season, and the two put up good numbers of their own Friday. Carpenter was 19-for-29 for 180 yards. He threw two interceptions. Coppack was 11-for-18 for 117 yards. "I thought both those kids played pretty much under control," Kramer said. "Because of injuries to (receivers) Toby Rundle and Derek Green they weren't playing with as good a receiver corps as they should have been. But Tyler Lulay played very well, as did Mike Brown and Mike Van Gorden."
Kramer said the scrimmage even benefited members of this year's varsity, such as tight ends Nick Parker and Brandon Bostick. But not for the short term. "Next year," he said smiling. "This will really help those guys, but not until next spring and next season. Nothing I saw today changes how we approach next week."
RUSHING: Isaiah Taito 23-91, Ryan Kelley 9-33.
PASSING: Cory Carpenter 29-19-2, 180, 0; Rick Coppack 18-11-0, 117, 0.
RECEIVING: Tyler Lulay 6-80, Ty McDonald 1-16, Nick Parker 4-25, Mike Brown 5-40, Mike Van Gorden 6-64, Brandon Bostick 3-35, Isaiah Taito 1-9.
