Bobcat Spikers Host Northern Arizona, Sacramento State

TAKING A LOOK BACK: The Bobcats split a pair of league matches at Weber State and Idaho State, last weekend. On Friday, Weber State handed the Bobcats its third straight five-game loss with a 28-30, 30-23, 30-28, 24-30, 15-12 decision. MSU was led by Kim Stonehouse with 16 kills and 19 digs, while Megan Zanto and Raelene Purnell added 15 and 13 kills, respectively. The Bobcats responded from the loss with a 30-21, 30-23, 30-19 win over Idaho State in Pocatello on Saturday night. Stonehouse paced Montana State with 15 kills, while Meggie Malyurek added 14 and Purenell 11. Libero Kandice Kelly recorded a match-high 16 digs, while setters Kami Buettner and Brittni Sesler combined for 43 assists to pace MSU to a .258 attack mark.
THE SCOUTING REPORT: Northern Arizona is 3-13 overall and 2-5 in Big Sky play. The Lumberjacks dropped a 3-0 decision to Sacramento State last Saturday. In the match, NAU was guided by Katy Knowlton with 13 kills and eight digs. On the season, Northern Arizona has been paced by Ellie Butterfield, who is averaging 2.84 kills and 2.05 digs per game. MSU defeated the Lumberjacks 3-0 earlier this season in Flagstaff. Sacramento State is 16-7 overall and 6-1 in Big Sky action. The Hornets will meet Montana on Friday, before facing the Bobcats. Sacramento State defeated MSU 3-1 earlier this season. Against NAU last Saturday, the Hornets had four players in double-digits, led by Atlee Hubbard with 16 kills. Hubbard is averaging 3.67 kills per game.
TOUGH AS NAILS: The Bobcats have perhaps the toughest schedule in the Big Sky Conference this season, and maybe one of the hardest in the nation, as well. Five of MSU’s losses have come at the hands of teams ranked in the CSTV/AVCA Division I Coaches Top 25 poll. Looking at this week’s poll, the ‘Cats have played #2 Washington, #7 Wisconsin, #10 Missouri, #14 California and #15 Brigham Young.
‘CAT OF THE WEEK: Junior Raelene Purnell was named Montana State Player of the Week for her effort at Weber State and Idaho State over the weekend. Purnell, who stepped into the starting rotation with the illness of Angela Wiebe, had her best weekend as a Bobcat. The 6-foot-1 middle blocker from Red Deer, Alberta, averaged 3.00 kills and 1.50 blocks per game, while hitting an impressive .375 from the field. Purnell recorded a career-high 13 kills against Weber State, and backed that performance with 11 kills and a .429 attack mark at Idaho State.
