Bobcat Golfers Head to Colorado

Montana State makes its third trip to Colorado next week, visiting the University of Colorado’s Heather Farr Memorial Monday and Tuesday. The Bobcats face a strong regional field at Broomfield.

The Squad
Montana State coach Brittany Basye takes the most possible experience to the Heather Farr Memorial, with both the team’s seniors (Kylie Anderson and Kristina Kurcinka) leading the way. Veteran sophomores Stephanie Simmons and Kelly Gillum join newcomer LaRae Smith in the lineup.
So Far
The Bobcats finished 13th out of 18 teams at the season-opening Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic in Fort Collins, CO, and 12th of 14 at Denver’s Ron Moore Intercollegiate. The Bobcats shot 938 as a team at the Ptarmigan, but slipped to 960 at the Denver tournament.
The Rest of the Field
This week’s tournament features a strong regional flavor. Host Colorado welcomes Boise State, Colorado State, Wyoming, Fresno State, Gonzaga, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico State, Oregon State, San Jose State, Washington State, and Big Sky foes Eastern Washington, Portland State and Weber State.

Montana State has finished 12th and 13th in its two tournaments... MSU has posted only one round of over 320 this year, a 326 inthe middle round of the Ron Moore Intercollegiate last week, and one round under 310, a season-opening 309 at CSU... the other four have been between 310 and 320.
Individual Notes
Senior Kristina Kurcinka rejoins the squad this weekend in Colorado after missing the Denver U. tourney... Kelly Gillum has shot the low Bobcat score in four of the team’s six rounds this year, with Kylie Anderson and LaRae Smith each shooting MSU’s low round once... Gillum has posted the team’s low score in each of the team’s season-opening tournaments... Kylie Anderson is shooting an average of 76.0 in the first and second rounds this season, but averages 81.0 in the final round of the first two tournaments... Kelly Gillum’s closing round of 80 at Denver is her only score outside the 70s this year... freshman LaRae Smith has shot exactly 244 in her first two tournaments at Montana State, and her only rounds in the 70s have been her closing rounds.

Brittany Basye, a former state champion at Billings Central and WAC Champion at New Mexico, is in her third season as MSU head coach. She was Dan Davies’ assistant for three seasons. Basye was WAC Player of the Year in ‘94, was ranked 17th nationally at one point, and qualified for ‘95 U.S. Open.

“We face another strong field, but it’s a tournament and a course we’re familiar with. We certainly have not performed up to our potential yet, but we’re working hard on improving. Hopefully we can keep getting better this week and this tournament will be our best yet. It will take a strong effort on everyone’s part. Everyone needs to begin performing at their level, and sooner is better than later. We need to have two strong tournaments to finish the fall.”
