Gottschalk Paces Bobcat Harriers at Pre-Nationals

Gottschalk finished eighth overall, covering the six-kilometer course in 22:18.
“Gottschalk had the race of her career,” said MSU head coach Dale Kennedy. “And, that includes cross country and track.”
Following Gottschalk for MSU were Elisabeth Driscoll, 13th, 22:39; Jayme Larson, 24th, 22:52; Kayla Larson, 25th, 22:55; Marilee Woyth, 59th, 24:19; Ana Casillas, 64th, 24:57; and Kristin Parker, 65th, 25:01.
“I was pleased with the split between No. 1-4,” Kennedy said. “We need to work on closing the gap between No. 4-5.”
Michigan won the Open Race with 20 points, followed by Southern Illinois 90, Minnesota 108, Kansas 115, MSU 129, Wisconsin 157, Notre Dame 163, Eastern Illinois 170, Georgetown 207, Dayton 210, IUPUI 250, Northwestern 302 and Ohio 348.
Tony Bachmann led the Bobcat men’s team to an eighth place finish in the Open Race. The junior covered the eight-kilometer course in 25:24 to place seventh.
He was followed by Kurt Michels, 28th, 26:08; Michael Kapus, 33rd, 26:26; Devin McDowell, 34th, 26:26; Chris Baldus, 51st, 27:20; Graydon Curry, 56th, 28:05; and Peter Hawkins, 60th, 28:29.
“Tony (Bachmann) and Kurt (Michels) went out pretty hard and were able to hang in there,” Kennedy said. “Our front runners were very solid. We had a few kids get over-extended, but I think this was a positive experience, and hopefully, that will carry us into the Big Sky Championships in two weeks.”
Notre Dame won the Open Race with 81 points, followed by BYU 82, Princeton 89, Colorado 90, Belmont 115, Southern Illinois 130, Tennessee 152, MSU 153, Samford 209, IUPUI 232, and Cincinnati 248.
MSU will compete at the Big Sky championships, Oct. 29 in Ogden, Utah.
