Vikings Top 'Cats on Walk-Off Kick

Eric Azorr kicked a 40-yard field goal as time expired to give Portland State 44-41 win over Montana State in Portland on Saturday.
Azorr's kick atoned for his poor performance on the evening. The junior had missed two field goals and had an extra point blocked, but Bobcat coach Mike Kramer said afterward that the game was not decided then.
"He made a clutch kick to win the game," said Kramer, whose Bobcats had won three straight against PSU. "But there were two key plays that really cost us the game. The first was getting a punt blocked by a guy we double-teamed. The second was our quarterback fumbling at midfield late in the game and our chances to try to win in overtime disintegrated."
Kramer wasn't disappointed with his team's effort. "We played our guts out, and they had just a little more sinew than we did," Kramer said. "This is a shocking loss for me, tough to swallow, but we have to bounce back because there's a long way to go."
With the Bobcats facing a first-and-10 from the PSU 42 with 23 seconds left, Lulay was hit on a blitz and fumbled. DJ Robinson recovered.
"They caved us in against empty (backfield)," Kramer said. "We used a formation we'd used a couple times and they brought a blitz they hadn't shown us."
After the turnover, Sawyer Smith completed a third-down pass to Allen Kennett to extend the drive, and another pass to Bodiford to set up the field goal.
The loss came in spite of a spectacular effort by Travis Lulay. Montana State's record-setting quarterback was 38-for-55 with four touchdowns and no interceptions. He also rushed for 50 yards.
"We played well enough offensively," Kramer said.
Portland State's Joe Rubin rushed for 137 yards, and Sawyer Smith was 17-for-25 passing for 252 yards.
Montana State's loss creates a jumble in the Big Sky. Four schools -- MSU, Eastern Washington, Montana, and Portland State -- all have one loss.
