Binford Ball Begins

Binford, who was named MSU’s 11th head coach in April, welcomes eleven players to the program this season. Included on the roster are seven returning letterwinners, along with two starters from last year’s 9-18 squad.
“We’re small in numbers, but big in heart,” Binford said. “I’ve been very pleased with how the team has responded during fall workouts and conditioning. We’re not going to focus on the win/loss stuff in the preseason. Instead, we’ll concentrate on getting better every time we step on the court.”
Leading the way for the Bobcats will be returning starters Alyssa Nelson and Scotta Morton. Nelson, a junior point guard, averaged 7.9 points and 3.4 assists per game, while Morton, a junior from Bozeman, chipped in 7.6 points and hauled down 3.6 rebounds per game.
“Nelson, Morton and Whitney Connolly will be the kids that set the tone,” Binford said. “With no seniors, they need to be the leaders. Team chemistry will be important to our success, and I think we’re headed in the right direction thanks to the junior class.”
Connolly, a 6-foot-3 junior from Ennis, returns as MSU’s most experienced player under the basket. Last winter, she played in all 27 games and averaged 2.7 points and 3.2 rebounds.
Other returning letterwinners include Brandie Buckless, Erin Goodman, Katy Proietti and Amanda DeHaan.
Four newcomers will also look to contribute this season, as well.
Shannon Bosley, Nubia Garcia, Jenny Heringer and Anne Phippard will all play a key role this season.
“The kids are working hard to understand their roles,” Binford said. “The preseason will be full of learning, but hopefully come the second round of Big Sky play; we’ll be clicking as a unit.”
The Bobcat women are scheduled to practice Monday and Wednesday mornings at 7 a.m., and Tuesday and Thursday afternoons at 1 p.m.
The schedule is subject to change.
