“We need someone to step up and take ownership of this team,” said third-year head coach Miya Malauulu. “When we get to the fifth game, we need somebody to come forward and take charge on the court. Someone that will give us their heart. Someone who refuses to lose. Right now, we don’t have that.”
Montana State (8-11, 2-4) was paced by three players in double-figure kills. Kim Stonehouse led the Bobcats with 16 kills and 19 digs, while Megan Zanto chipped in 15 kills and six blocks. Sophomore Raelene Purnell, who is filling in for Angela Wiebe, who is sidelined with an illness, registered a career-high 13 kills and led the team with eight blocks. Libero Kandice Kelly led all players with a match-high 25 digs.
“We got out to a great start, but just couldn’t maintain the momentum in games two and three,” Malauulu said. “In game four, we dominated them. We out-hit Weber State .342 to .156.
“In the fifth game, we held a 10-9 advantage, but then went to sleep as they outscored us 6-2 down the stretch,” Malauulu said. “That’s where we need someone to step-up.”
Weber State (9-10, 4-2) was paced by Chelsea Bair with 20 kills and 14 digs.
MSU will play at Idaho State on Saturday night.
