Montana State quarterback Travis Lulay earned national and conference player of the week honors Monday, a day that saw the Bobcats break into The Sports Network Top 10 for the first time ever.
Lulay's sixth career fourth-quarter comeback snapped a four-game Bobcat losing streak. The senior from Aumsville, Ore., rolled up 425 yards of total offense and scored the team's final two touchdowns himself. A 19-yard pass to Tramaine Murray with four seconds to play set up Jeff Hastings' game-winning field goal. The award was Lulay's sixth Big Sky Offensive Player of the Week award, and earlier this year he picked up a Big Sky Special Teams Player of the Week award. I-AA.org also honored Lulay by naming him a National Weekly All-Star.
While the award is old hat for Lulay, Hastings picked up his first Big Sky honor. The junior from Long Beach, Calif., nailed a 39-yard field goal as time expired to seal MSU's 17-point fourth-quarter comeback. He also hit a 37-yarder in the last minute of the first half to forge a tie, and made all three of his extra point attempts. Hastings is 8-for-10 on field goal tries this year.
MSU cracked the top 10, breaking in at number nine, up two spots from last week. The Bobcats also appeared in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll top 10 last week, the first such appearances since the 1984 season. MSU has not previously appeared among the top 10 teams in the poll conducted by The Sports Network.
