Bobcats Hang on to Stop Bengals

Travis Lulay threw for one touchdown and rushed for another, leading 12th-ranked Montana State to a 30-28 Homecoming win over #24 Idaho State in Bozeman on Saturday.
Lulay accounted for 275 yards of total offense, 246 through the air, but the Bobcat defense stepped up in the second half to secure the win. After Idaho State rumbled for 246 first-half yard, 158 rushing, MSU limited the Bengals to just 88 total yards in the second half, 35 on the ground.
"The defense played tremendous in the second half," said MSU coach Mike Kramer. "It was an exciting tussle between two pretty darn good football teams. I'm proud of our guys, and I'm really, really impressed with Larry Lewis' guys. This was an outstanding football game."
After Idaho State cut the Bobcat lead to 24-21 at the intermission, Lulay put his signature on the game in a big way. At the end of MSU's first drive of the half, Lulay the punter pinned ISU on the two-yard line for the second time in the game. After the Bobcats forced ISU to punt, the Bobcats marched to the Bengal 20. On a second-and-goal from the Bengal 20, Lulay dashed 20 yards for a touchdown, giving MSU a 30-21 lead and what proved to be the winning score.
"That might be the best run I've seen him make," Kramer said. "That's because I ran out of fingers for the number of guys that missed him on this run... It was one of the sterling plays on a big-play day."
Idaho State marched 81 yards in 11 plays that spanned the late third and early fourth quarters to cut MSU's lead to 30-28, but a pair of time-consuming Bobcat drives proved decisive even without providing points. Idaho State quarterback Matt Hagler was 1-for-4 for five yards in ISU's last two drives.
Montana State and Idaho State each finished the day with a 3-2 record. The Bobcats are now 1-0 in Big Sky play, which ISU is 1-1.
