Montana State survived a snowstorm all day Saturday and a late-game flurry against Idaho State in Reed Gym Saturday night, but the result was a 74-66 overtime win that spurred the Bobcats to a 2-0 start in Big Sky play.
Marvin Moss scored a career-high 23 points and keyed the Bobcats to the first six points in overtime en route to his career-high 23 points. Moss, 6-for-11 from the field and 11-for-14 from the line, also grabbed nine rebounds.
"We went to Marvin in the overtime and he hit his free throws," said MSU coach Mick Durham. "That really got us going." It was a Moss miss at the line, however, that was the big play of overtime. The ball was tipped outside to Casey Durham, who coolly drained a three-pointer to give MSU a 66-60 lead.
That the 'Cats would get to overtime looked improbable at the end of regulation. Idaho State had the ball in the hands of Nate Rede, who scored a season-high 19 points, with the game tied and time running out. Al Beye blocked Rede's shot to send the game to overtime.
"I was nervous when they had the ball with 14 seconds left," Durham said, "but with Al Beye in the game you never know. It's tough to score inside with Big Al in there. He got a big blocked shot."
Idaho State led on only one possession, a 60-58 margin grabbed by Slim Millien's dunk with 2:10 to play. Ja'Ron Jefferson hit a short jumper to tie the game, then Durham and Jefferson got steals on the next two possessions to quell ISU's run.
Idaho State scored only 76 points combined in its previous two outings, and cold shooting was evident early. MSU jumped out to a 7-2 lead. Idaho State hit its first shot of the night on a Nate Rede layup then failed to score on five straight possessions.
ISU shot below 30% for the first 15 minutes, but finished the half well. The Bengals closed with an 8-3 run that drew them to within 31-26 at the intermission.
Nate Rede, averaging just 3.5 points entering the game, had nine points in the first half. The Bobcats outrebounded ISU 22-13 in the first half, but turned the ball over nine times to ISU's five.
