MSU Track Team Hosts Combined Events Invitational on Monday

The heptathlon will begin Monday at 1 p.m. with the 55-meter dash, with the long jump, shot put and high jump also being competed. The 55-meter hurdles will open Tuesday’s events, followed by the pole vault and 1000-meters. The women’s pentathlon will start at 1:30 p.m. on Monday with the 55-hurdles, followed by the shot put, high jump, long jump and 800-meters.
“We only get a couple of times during the indoor season when we can run and compete in combined events,” said MSU head coach Dale Kennedy. “Our meet on Monday and Tuesday, and the Mountain State Games in Pocatello in February, are really the only opportunities for northern division Big Sky schools to qualify.”
The Bobcat men will be led in the invitational by Brad Benjamin, Steven Hodge and Jim Evans. Benjamin, who is redshirting and competing unattached, along with Hodge are the MSU school-record holders in the event with 5,002 points. Evans placed 8th in the heptathlon at last year’s Big Sky Indoor Championships.
MSU will also look to newcomer Kevin Ludwig to contribute, as well. Ludwig will be competing in his first-ever combined event, but according to Kennedy, is an excellent jumper and sprinter.
The Montana State women will be paced by Big Sky Conference and MSU school record-holder Erin Jones. Jones, who won last year’s league title with 3,866 points, is redshirting the indoor season and will compete unattached. Also participating on Monday will be Kelsey Kirkpatrick, Meghan Bucy and Sarah Eby.
The University of Montana will also be competing on Monday and Tuesday.
