Montana State Skiers Post Impressive Finish at Utah Invite

Denver won the team title with 568 points, followed by Colorado 488, Utah 486, Alaska-Anchorage 452, New Mexico 421, MSU 373, Nevada 329, Western State 242, Whitman 191, and Boise State 66.
“We’re pretty excited with our performance,” said Dan Brelsford, MSU director of skiing. “What’s even more exciting is that we know we can do better. It’s been awhile since we’ve been within striking distance of teams like New Mexico and Alaska-Anchorage.”
The Bobcat men’s slalom team notched 62 points, which was just behind UAA and Western State. MSU was led by Don Brockett, who finished seventh with a two-run total of 1:41.80. He was followed closely by teammate Cory Harris, who placed 13th overall with a clocking of 1:42.27.
Also contributing was Tyler Smedsrud, 34th, 1:50.47 and Robbie Massie, 45th, 2:11.94. Dan McKay and Crister Kjos did not finish the event.
The MSU women’s giant slalom contingent also had a good day. Sophomore Smaranda Munteanu finished seventh overall in a time of 2:13.26. She was followed by Alex Munteanu, 18th, 2:16.20; Crystal Wright, 32nd, 2:19.11; Chi Chi Williams, 33rd, 2:19.36 and Ashley Bembenek, 2:28.58. Christina Kim did not finish the race.
Senior Emily Robins paced MSU’s nordic effort on Saturday, placing 10th in the five-kilometer freestyle event with a time of 16:55.1. She was followed by Amanda Bowden, 14th, 17:24.7; Rachel Goldstein, 28th, 18:56.0; Meredith Gilliland, 34th, 19:34.0; and Karoline Teien, 35th, 20:14.0.
The Bobcat men were guided by Mark Iverson, who placed 14th in the 10-kilometer freestyle in a clocking of 28:46.5. Also finishing for MSU were Nathan Park, 18th, 29:26.3; Chris Coe, 23rd, 30:01.3; and Ryan Holtan, 27th, 30:26.2.
After the opening day of the Utah Invitational, the Bobcats also sat in sixth place behind the strong showing of the women’s nordic team and the men’s giant slalom contingent.
Robins placed tenth overall in the five-kilometer classic race. Robins posted a time of 18:14.2. She was followed by Amanda Bowden, 19th, 19:02.6; Rachel Goldstein, 28th, 19:48.3; Frasier Opel, 29th, 19:50.3; and Karoline Teien, 33rd, 20:14.9.

He was followed by Cory Harris, 23rd, 2:10.46; Robbie Massie, 45th, 2:37.31; and Tyler Smedsrud, 47th, 2:56.34. Bobcat newcomers Crister Kjos and Dan McKay did not finish the event.
In the women’s slalom race, MSU was led by Alex Munteanu, who placed 23rd overall in a time of 1:52.59. In the men’s 10-kilometer classic race, the Bobcats were paced by Phillip Violett, who placed 21st overall in a time of 32:36.3.
