Montana State Skiers Open Season at Utah Invitational
1/4/2005 12:00:00 AM | Men's Skiing, Women's Skiing
Competing in the invitational will be teams from Utah, Nevada, Denver, Colorado, New Mexico, Alaska-Anchorage, Western State, Whitman and Boise State.
“We’re looking forward to our first races,” said Dan Brelsford, MSU’s director of skiing. “We have a much better team than last season and we’re anxious to see how we compete.”
The MSU women’s alpine squad possesses the most experience as Alex and Smaranda Munteanu both return after qualifying for the NCAA Championships, last winter. The duo will be bolstered by veteran Crystal Wright and newcomers Chi Chi Williams and Kristina Kim.
On the nordic side, veterans Emily Robins and Mandy Bowden will pace the Bobcats, while Frasier Opel, Rachel Goldstein and Karoline Teien will look to contribute, as well.
“We should get more points on the nordic side this season,” Brelsford said. “The women are very capable, have good depth and will be exciting to watch.”
The MSU men’s squad will also look to improve upon its performance from last season. The Bobcat men’s program was resurrected last winter after lying dormant since the mid 1980s.
The Bobcat alpine squad will be led by Tyler Smedsrud and Robbie Massie. Also look for newcomers Crister Kjos, Dan McKay, Don Brockett and Cory Harris to score points. On the nordic end, MSU will be paced by 2004 NCAA qualifier Christian Coe. Coe will also be helped this season by Ryan Holtan, Mark Iverson, Nathan Park and Jackson Harris.
“The alpine guys are skiing very fast and they’re doing it as a group,” Brelsford said. “Grethe (Hagensen, Assistant Coach) has a strong bunch of kids on the nordic side and they’ll be much improved.”
Following this week’s invite, MSU will compete in the University of Alaska-Anchorage Invitational to be held in Jackson, Wyoming.
