Utah Upends Bobcat Men’s and Women’s Tennis Squads

Montana State (0-1) opened the match winning the doubles point as the Bobcats earned victories at Nos. 2 and 3. MSU’s No. 2 tandem of Federico Ueltschi and Kyle McDonald won 9-8, while Tej Chigateri and Jake Berriochoa combined for an 8-4 victory.
Ueltschi, ranked No. 68 in the nation, and freshman Kyle McDonald, were MSU’s lone winners in singles action. Ueltschi defeated Tomasz Grzyb 6-3, 1-6, 6-3, while McDonald captured No. 5 singles with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Ryan Scott.
“It was a tough match,” said MSU head men’s coach Mike Phillips. “I was very pleased with our doubles play, especially since this was our first match of the season. Federico (Ueltschi) was very solid and Kyle (McDonald) really came out on fire.”
MSU will play at Utah State on Saturday afternoon.
The Utah women’s team captured the opening doubles points, and then won five-of-six singles matches in straight sets to earn a 7-0 victory over the Bobcats. The lone match that went the distance was at No. 2 singles, where Emily Kwok recorded a 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 victory.
“I was happy with the way we competed, especially in doubles play,” said Montana State women’s coach Denise Albrecht. “We mixed up our doubles tandems and they did a great job. Give Utah credit, they’re a very solid team.”
MSU will host Northern Colorado on Saturday at 3 p.m. in the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center.
