THIS WEEK’S ACTION
Things heat up in Worthington Arena Friday night, when Montana State hosts the annual Cat-Griz Dual beginning at 5 pm (field events). Little seems to separate the in-state rivals, who were picked in a flat-footed tie in the men’s preseason poll (at fourth) and right next to each other in the women’s poll (MSU third, UM fourth). The ‘Cats bring an extremely young team into the meet.

Opening Up
Montana State’s season-opening meet last week was a success in the eyes of Dale Kennedy. Bobcat throwers assaulted MSU’s top 10 lists. Carra Greyn (45-10.5 in the shot put, 7th in school history, and 54-10.75 in the weight throw, 8th) and Lynn Craver (56-4 in the weight throw, 7th) -- reached the lists. “Mike Carignan’s throwers really came out firing,” Kennedy said.
League Leaders
Three Bobcats currently lead the Big Sky in their events: Lynn Craver (weight throw, 56-4), Kevin Clary (3000m, 8:22.60aa), Thomas Seely (pole vault, 16-0), and the men’s 4x400 relay squad (3:20.36).
Weighty Matters
A year after finishing first-through-fifth in the women’s weight throw at the Big Sky indoor meet, MSU is up to its old tricks. Lynn Craver, Carra Greyn and Megan Lee hold down the first three spots in the Big Sky weight throw standings. Ashley Jones is seventh and Lisa Kilgore 10th this week, as well.

Thirteen Bobcats occupy spots this week in the Big Sky’s top five. Of those, six are juniors, four are sophomores, and two are frosh.
Athlete of the Week
Lynn Craver (sr., Belgrade) became the first Bobcat of the season to earn Big Sky Athlete of the Week honors. Craver’s 56-4 toss in the weight throw won that event, leads the BSC, and is 7th in MSU history.

“Both Montana and us have had one meet to test the waters and see where we’re at. I think the fact that we’re in a scoring meet is almost unwelcome this early in the season, but the team element always draws attention from fans and the media, and I truly believe it’s tremendously important for our sport. Montana has outstanding teams on both sides (men’s and women’s). The Montana and Montana State men were picked in a fourth-place tie in the preseason coaches poll, while our women were picked third and theirs fourth and the two were separated by only a couple of points, so this should be a very close competition. Their sprint crews are very solid, and they have alented jumpers. We’re going to have to rely on our strengths, the throws, and take a lion’s share of the points in the distance events, too. Our kids are very tuned into the team element, the rivalry element, of this meet, but getting qualifying marks is also an objective. That will also be a focus this week, continuing to drive for qualifying marks.”

Dale Kennedy is in his 25th year as MSU’s women’s coach, his third as coach of the combined program... was Big Sky Coach of the Year for the 2001 indoor and ‘03 outdoor seasons... has led MSU to two women’s cross country titles this decade, and has led the Lady Cats to three conference track titles and a pair of runnerup finishes... has produced five All-Americas and 17 NCAA qualifiers.

In his 22nd year at MSU... has coached 45 athletes to all-Big Sky honors... MSU’s throwers led the Big Sky in points in 2002 and ‘03... MSU became the first Big Sky school in history to hold the top five spots in one event during the 2004 Big Sky Indoor women’s shot put competition.
