The Bobcat women will host three matches, including Friday, Jan. 28 against the University of Utah at 4 p.m. in the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center. The MSU women will also face Northern Colorado on Saturday at 3 p.m., and the University of Montana on Sunday at 2 p.m.
The Montana State men’s squad will begin defense of their 2004 Big Sky Conference title when they open at the University of Utah on Friday at 5 p.m. They will also play at Utah State on Saturday at 4 p.m.
“We’re excited to be playing at home,” said MSU women’s head coach Denise Albrecht. “We get great support from the community and it really gives us a home-court advantage.”
MSU (0-1) will open against a Utah squad that is currently 1-2 overall. The Utes lone victory came over Portland. This weekend will mark the season opener for both Northern Colorado and Montana.
“Utah is always tough,” Albrecht said, referring to her alma mater. “They are solid from the top to the bottom of their ladder. UNC is playing their first Division I matches, and the ‘Cat-Griz match is always a battle.”
MSU will be led by its 1-2 freshmen punch of Nicole Luetolf and Nuria Lozano, both who picked up victories at Utah State, last Saturday. The rest of the line-up will feature Tyffani Thomas, Remy Clark, Vera Vasileva and Katy Clarke.
The Bobcat men’s tennis team will open at Utah. MSU posted a 17-6 overall record last spring, and advanced to its second-ever NCAA Tournament. The ‘Cats will be led by No. 1 singles standout Federico Ueltschi, who is currently ranked 65th in the nation.
MSU will also be buoyed by its top doubles tandem of Marek Gebicki and Braden Olson. Although the duo earned an automatic bid to the NCAAs last year, they are not currently ranked in the nation’s top 60. However, during fall play Gebicki and Olson knocked off Boise State’s Thomas Schoeck and Luke Shields. BSU’s doubles team is currently ranked 12th in the country.
“We open against two very good teams,” said MSU head coach Mike Phillips. “We’ll have our work cut out for us, but I know that we’ll compete at a high level and will be shooting to be 2-0 after this weekend.”
The men’s team will be at home on Feb. 18 when they host MSU-Billings.
