Montana State used a balanced offensive attack and a 13-2 run early in the second half to take control of an 88-68 win over Northern Arizona on Saturday in Worthington Arena.
All five Montana State starters scored in double-figures, as the 'Cats scored a season-high 88 points and shot a season's best 59% from the field. Leading 53-45 with just under 16 minutes to play, Ja'Ron Jefferson keyed fast-break layups with a steal and a blocked shot as the Bobcats scored nine straight points to build a 62-45 lead. Branden Miller then keyed a 7-0 Bobcat run at the seven minute mark to build a 23-point lead, the NAU would get no closer than 20 the rest of the way.
"I thought we got off to a great start in the second half," said MSU coach Mick Durham. "We had a couple of spurts and we were able to finish once we built that lead, which feels good. Our defense was very good in the second half."
Northern Arizona struggled shooting the basketball throughout the game, hitting 37.5% in the first half and only 28% in the second. The Bobcats forced 18 Lumberjack turnovers.
Freshman standouts Kyle Landry and Cedric Hill each scored 13 to lead NAU. Marvin Moss had 18 points to lead the 'Cats, while Miller and Jefferson each scored 16. Nick Dissly had 11 and Al Beye 10.
Montana State raises its record to 10-8 overall, a league-leading 5-0 in Big Sky play, with the win. Northern Arizona is now 9-10 overall, 2-4 in the league. The Bobcats visit Eastern Washington on Thursday night. Northern Arizona visits Sacramento State on Saturday.
