MSU Opens Track Season Friday

Montana State opens its 2005 track and field season in earnest this weekend, hosting the MSU Open on Friday. The meet will also mark the season opener for the University of Montana, and also features the University of Mary, Dickinson State University, and Black Hills State.

Opening Up
The Bobcats open the season with an Open, the MSU Open, featuring the ‘Cats, the Grizzlies, and a handful of schools from the Dakotas, in a non-scoring meet. Several Bobcats competed in a multi-event competition in Bozeman two weeks ago, but this weekend’s MSU Open will mark the first competition of the year for most MSU athletes.
Top Returners
MSU coach Dale Kennedy welcomes several outstanding returners to the 2005 Bobcat track squad. The men’s team is led by two-time conference indoor champion Casey Jermyn (sr., 3000 and 5000), and all-conference returners Steve Heberly (so., 200), Tanner Rauk (shot put). Brad Sherer won the Big Sky indoor weight throw in 2003. MSU’s women’s team boasts three all-conference returners on the women’s side, all in two events. Lynn Craver and Karen Helvey return in the weight throw, while Megan Lee returns in the shot put.
Redshirt Roundup
Several outstanding Bobcats will be sitting out the indoor season this year in preparation for the outdoor season. The most noteworthy is Erin Jones, who last year was the Big Sky Indoor Field Events Athlete of the Meet. Thrower Hannah Furlong and sprinter/jumper Adriana Friezen will also sit out on the women’s side, while thrower Josh Henigman and jumper Brad Benjamin will redshirt on the men’s side. All are expected to compete during the outdoor season.

“The open format is probably good for all of us. This is our first meet of the year, and it gives us a chance to find out whe we are. After this meet we’ll be able to fine-tune our goals and see where we are. Montana, Montana State, and NAU are the last three teams in the league to start this year, which is how it usually is, and typically we’re able to catch up and compete well at the end of the season. We’ll run some kids in off events this week for developmental reasons. As always, we have some kids fightin some injury stuff, most of it minor. We had a lot of kids come back from Christmas with some illness, so we’ve been fighting our way through that. That has compromised the fitness level of some kids. We should be facing a good field. Dickinson State’s men’s team won the NAIA National Championship last year, and they have an outstanding sprint crew. Mary has been a national chmpionship contender for several years, and they are outstanding in the sprints and jumps, as well. Montana should have a very solid team this year. (Former Bobcat) Lyle Weese is training in Bozeman, and he will compete Friday, as well.”

Dale Kennedy is in his 25th year as MSU’s women’s coach, his third as coach of the combined program... was Big Sky Coach of the Year for the 2001 indoor and ‘03 outdoor seasons... has led MSU to two women’s cross country titles this decade, and has led the Lady Cats to three conference track titles and a pair of runnerup finishes... has produced five All-Americas and 17 NCAA qualifiers.
MIKE CARIGNAN, throws
In his 22nd year at MSU... has coached 45 athletes to all-Big Sky honors... MSU’s throwers led the Big Sky in points in 2002 and ‘03... MSU became the first Big Sky school in history to hold the top five spots in one event during the 2004 Big Sky Indoor women’s shot put competition.
TOM EITEL, jumps/multis
In 10th year at MSU... MSU vaulter from ‘79-82... won the ‘82 Big Sky pole vault title... coached Big Sky champs Brian Schweyen, Lacy Hinzpeter, and Erin Jones.
LACY HINZPETER, sprints
Second year coaching sprints... won six Big Sky titles... set league record for points scored in indoor championship competition.
