Montana State Upset Bid Falls Short in Overtime

After scoring only 28 points in their last outing at Utah Valley State, the Bobcats came out on fire against Montana, hitting 44 percent from the field and converting 14-of-24 from three-point range, but their bid to upset preseason favorite Montana fell short 70-68 in overtime, Friday night in front of raucous crowd of 3,977 in the Adams Center.
Montana converted a sizeable 26-of-38 from the free throw line, while the Bobcats hit four-of-five from the charity stripe. In all, Montana State (6-8, 0-1) was whistled for 28 fouls, while Montana (8-6, 1-0) had eight for the game.
“Our kids fought hard and I’m very proud of their effort,” said MSU head coach Greg Kudrna. “When your opponent outscores you by 22-points at the line, it’s going to be an uphill battle. But give our kids credit, they battled to whole way.”
The Bobcats opened the first stanza on fire hitting 8-of-11 from beyond the arc. Seven different MSU players hit treys as the ‘Cats converted only five baskets inside the line, three of which came from Hillary Scott. Montana State ended the period shooting 57 percent from the field, while holding the Lady Griz to 33 percent.
The ‘Cats took their largest lead of the first half at 33-23 following a Scott lay-up on a fast break at the 2:03 mark of the stanza.
MSU played most of the opening stanza without Kati Burrows, who recorded three minutes after picking up two quick fouls.
MSU led 35-28 at intermission.
In the second half, MSU built their largest lead of the game at 42-30 at the 16:04 mark on an Alyssa Nelson lay-in. However, the Lady Griz answered with a 12-0 run to tie the score at 42-all with 12:36 remaining on a Juliann Keller basket.
Jaimey Tanner then converted five straight points to give MSU a 47-42 advantage, before UM answered with an 8-0 run to take a 50-47 lead following a Laura Cote trey. The score was tied three times down the stretch and a Lady Griz attempt to win the game in regulation in the final seconds fell short.
In the overtime period, MSU took the lead on a Burrows free throw, but Montana answered on a Johanna Closson bucket. The game was tied at 65-all, before UM outscored the Bobcats 5-3 to win the game.
MSU was led in scoring by Tanner and Nelson with 17 points, apiece. Keller led UM with a game-high 23 points, while Hollie Tyler added 14 points and 16 rebounds.
MSU will play at Sacramento State on Thursday night.
