Senior Megan Zanto paced the Bobcat attack with 14 kills, while adding a match-high 13 blocks for her first double-double of the season. Also in double-figure kills for the Bobcats were Meggie Malyurek 13 and Angela Wiebe 10. Senior setter Kamber Kelly contributed 46 assists, eight kills and six blocks.
“We really came out passing the ball well and running our offense,” said second-year MSU head coach Miya Malauulu. “Then things started breaking down with our passing and blocking in the second and third games.
“In the fourth game, we mixed things up and had Angela Wiebe hitting outside and Raelene Purnell playing some middle. We got off to a great start and held on for the win.
“In the final game, it was all defense and blocking, and I was happy with the way we closed out the match.”
Montana State (3-0) played an outstanding defensive match as sophomore libero Kandice Kelly racked up 31 digs to pace five Bobcats in double-digit digs. Also notching double-figure digs were LeAnn Kinvig and Malyurek 15, Kim Stonehouse 14 and Kamber Kelly 13.
MSU out hit the Cougars .180 to .154, and held a 15 to six advantage in blocking.
Purnell, a freshman from Red Deer, Alberta, came off the bench for her first action of the season and tallied six kills and a .429 attack mark.
The Bobcats will face the University of Alabama to conclude tournament play on Saturday afternoon.
