Also in double-figure kills for Montana State (2-0) were Megan Zanto 15, Meggie Malyurek 12, and Angela Wiebe 10. MSU setter Kamber Kelly dished out 50 assists and added 16 digs.
“Xavier played a fast tempo,” said junior middle blocker Megan Zanto. “It took us a little while to get use to the faster sets. We just needed to slow things down on our side of the net, and once we did, we found success.”
Aside from Kamber Kelly’s dig total, the Bobcats also got a strong defensive effort from Kandice Kelly with a team-high 17 kills, while Malyurek and LeAnn Kinvig added 13 saves, apiece. Zanto led all blockers with a match-high nine blocks.
After capturing the opening two games hitting at a .313 clip, the Bobcats struggled from the floor in the next two sets hitting a paltry .078. However, MSU righted the ship in the deciding game out-hitting Xavier (1-1) .727 to -.222.
“It was a good early season test,” said second-year MSU head coach Miya Malauulu. “It was nice to see how we responded in the fifth game. We did a nice job of taking care of things on our side of the net.”
MSU plays the College of Charleston this afternoon at 3:30 p.m. (MST).
