Idaho State Spikers Claw Past Bobcats in Five

“We got off to great start and won pretty handily,” said MSU head coach Miya Malauulu, referring to the opening game. “Our passing was on the money and we were running the middle.”
Montana State (8-4, 0-1) out-hit the Bengals .400 to .128 in the opening game. However, MSU hitting numbers wouldn’t be the same for the rest of the match as the Bobcats hit a paltry .130 over the next four games.
“Our hitters weren’t able to terminate the ball in games two and three,” Malauulu said. “It wasn’t so much what Idaho State was doing, but more of the things that we had control of. I just don’t think we competed very hard.
“We’re one of the top blocking teams in the country and the Big Sky, and we just didn’t seal the net,” Malauulu added.
Idaho State (4-10, 1-0) out-blocked the Bobcats for the match.
Montana State was paced in the loss by Megan Zanto with a team-high 19 kills, while Kim Stonehouse added 16. Setter Kamber Kelly dished out 45 assists and added 24 digs. Younger sister Kandice Kelly recorded 23 digs in the loss.
ISU was led by Nikki Randall and Ali Gorny with 18 and 15 kills, respectively.
The Bobcats had a chance at winning the match as game five featured three ties and three lead changes, before Randall’s kill ended the contest.
“We need to compete for the duration of an entire match,” Malauulu said. “We made our mistakes at inopportune times.”
The Bobcats will look for a road split at Weber State on Saturday night.
