Bobcat Spikers Prepare for Big Sky Opener

LET THE GAMES BEGIN: The Montana State volleyball squad will open its 2004 Big Sky Conference schedule at Idaho State, Friday, Sept. 24 in Pocatello. Match time is 7 p.m., in Reed Gym. The Bobcats will continue their road trip on Saturday, Sept. 25 at Weber State University. Match time is 7 p.m., in the Dee Events Center in Ogden, Utah. Following its road-trip this week, the Bobcats will return to Shroyer Gym to face Sacramento State on Oct. 1.

CAT-CHAT: Montana State is 9-7 in Big Sky openers, including winning its last six consecutive starts. Last year, the ‘Cats opened with a 3-0 win over Idaho State in Shroyer Gym. MSU’s last loss in a Big Sky opener came in 1997 with a 3-2 setback at Portland State...The Bobcats might want to relocate to Switzerland as they have posted a 10-0 record on neutral courts the past two seasons...Congratulations goes out to Kamber Kelly after becoming the only Bobcat volleyball player in history to ever record 3,000 assists and 1,000 digs...junior Megan Zanto remains second on the all-time Big Sky Conference blocks per game chart at 1.51 per game. Montana’s Dana Benish holds the all-time mark at 1.60 blocks per game. Zanto was ranked eighth in the nation in blocks per game (1.87 bpg) last week, and after play in the Buckeye Classic, now averages 1.79 blocks per game. Last season, she ranked 10th in the country in blocking...Kim Stonehouse, Angela Wiebe and Kandice Kelly were named to The Ohio State Buckeye Classic All-Tourney team. To date, seven different Bobcats have earned all-tournament team honors this fall...After beating the Bobcats 3-0 on Saturday night, No. 25 Ohio State moved up the USA Today/AVCA Coaches Poll to No. 20...Bobcat fans can listen to Friday night’s Montana State-Idaho State match via the ISU website www.isubengals.com... Over the duration of Bobcat head coach Miya Malauulu’s seven-year tenure at MSU, the ‘Cats have recorded a whopping 66-15 non-conference mark.
BOBCAT PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Angela Wiebe, a 6-foot-1 middle blocker from Winnipeg, Manitoba, was named Montana State Player of the Week for her efforts at The Ohio State University Buckeye Classic, last weekend. Wiebe averaged 2.44 kills and 1.11 blocks per game, while hitting .370 from the field. In addition, she added two aces and two digs. Wiebe had her best outing of the weekend with six kills, a .500 attack mark, two aces, two digs and a season-high eight blocks in MSU’s win over Florida International. For her effort, Wiebe garnered Buckeye Classic All-Tournament accolades.
