The Bobcat women placed third overall behind Utah and Weber State.
Jermyn finished the five-mile course in a time of 24:26.31, surpassing the old record of 24:31.0 set by Lyle Weese in 2002. Jermyn was followed by Jonathan Gibson, third, 24:45.18; Josh Ricardi, fourth, 25:01.90; Tony Bachmann, 13th, 25:23.81; Joseph Wirtz, 20th, 25:39.00; Nick Green, 23rd, 25:47.50; Caleb Ambrose, 27th, 26:01.78; and Devin McDowell, 28th, 26:06.03.
“I’m really pleased with our men’s effort,” said MSU head coach Dale Kennedy. “We were without one of our top three runners and we had some kids step up to the challenge.
“Casey and Jonathan were very solid, and I’m very happy with the performance of Joseph Wirtz, who for his first race at MSU came up big,” Kennedy added.
The Bobcat men finished with 41 points, followed by Weber State 65, Utah 79, Idaho State 90, Montana 115, Utah Valley State 115, and Westminster 244. In addition, MSU won all its dual meets, including an 18-42 victory over Montana in the annual ‘Cat-Griz match-up.
After learning that two of its four ineligible runners were available to compete on Saturday, the Montana State women’s team had a solid season opener.
MSU was paced by Elisabeth Driscoll, a freshman from Bozeman, who placed fifth overall in a time of 17:42.74. She was followed by Mayra Morgado, 9th, 17:59.74; Ashley Hadway, 10th, 18:00.68; Kayla Larson, 17th, 18:20.90; Athlene Allred, 18th, 18:21.12; Ana Casillas, 39th, 19:12.73; and Stephanie Carter, 45th, 19:32.87.
“Mayra and Stephanie had a very stressful week and heading into the meet we weren’t exactly sure how we would respond as a team,” Kennedy said. “I thought we responded very well.
“Elisabeth had the home course advantage and really a had a great race,” Kennedy said. “Mayra, for having a very trying week, also had a steady race. I’m happy that we were able to stay close to Weber State, despite the adversity of the week.”
Utah claimed the women’s title with 42 points, followed by Weber State 51, MSU 59, Montana 94, Utah Valley State 122, Idaho State 127, and Westminster 225. Elise Greenwood-Bahr of Utah won the individual title, covering the three-mile course in 17:11.12.
In dual meet action, the Bobcats snapped a four-year drought, defeating Montana 23-32. MSU also recorded dual victories over Idaho State and Utah Valley State.
