Montana State Cross Country Squads Host 25th MSU Invitational

“We’re antsy to get going,” said Bobcat head coach Dale Kennedy. “We’re going to be dealing with a little adversity, but I’m anxious to see where both the men and women are at this point in the season.”
Competing with MSU this Saturday will be squads from Idaho State, Montana, Utah, Utah Valley State, Weber State and Westminster College.
The Montana State men, who were picked second in the preseason Big Sky Coaches poll and currently ranked fifth in the NCAA Mountain Region, will be paced by 2002 league champion Casey Jermyn. Also looking to make an impact is senior Jonathan Gibson, who finished fourth at the 2003 Big Sky meet. MSU will be without the services of all-conference performer Kevin Clary, who is sidelined with an illness.
“Not having Kevin Clary in the line-up will hurt us, but it will also give our underclassmen an opportunity to step-up,” Kennedy said.
Kennedy, who is beginning his 23rd season at Montana State, will look to Tony Bachmann, Caleb Ambrose, Nick Green, Josh Ricardi, Devin McDowell and Joseph Wirtz to fill the void left by Clary’s absence.
Montana State’s women’s team will be running half empty, as four runners have been deemed ineligible due to eligibility rules. The Bobcats will be without the services of top runner and all-Big Sky Conference performer Mayra Morgado as well as newcomers Stephanie Carter, Carrie Gottschalk and Wasewi Shawl.
“It breaks your heart that these kids can’t run this weekend,” Kennedy said. “They are all great students and their issues will eventually be taken care of, but we will certainly miss them on Saturday morning.”
Instead of Morgado, the Bobcats will look to junior transfer Ashley Hadway and Bozeman native and true-freshman Elisabeth Driscoll to pick-up the slack. Also competing for the women’s team will be Athlene Allred, Ana Casillas, and Kayla Larson.
“We’ll see what happens, but the race Saturday will not be a true look at what this team is capable of achieving,” Kennedy said.
The invitational will also serve as the annual ‘Cat-Griz dual.
