Montana State Spikers Defeat Portland to Claim Holiday Inn Classic Title

Montana State defeated Portland 28-30, 30-20, 30-21, 30-20 in the tournament finale to give the Bobcats, Boise State and UP identical 3-1 records. MSU claimed championship honors by winning percentage. The ‘Cats finished the weekend with a .714 mark followed by Boise State .688 and Portland .667.
“I really like how we responded after game one and with our loss to Boise State earlier in the day,” said MSU head coach Miya Malauulu. “We got great help off the bench from Raelene Purnell and Sammy Krier, and once we got ourselves steadied-out, we got our offense rolling.”
Montana State (6-2) was paced in the victory by Megan Zanto with 18 kills, a .448 attack mark and six digs. Also in double-digit kills for the Bobcats were Meggie Malyurek 17 and Kim Stonehouse 14. Three players hit double-figures in digs as Kamber Kelly, Malyurek and Kandice Kelly all registered 16 saves each. Kamber Kelly dished out 55 assists and added nine kills.
Portland (5-2) opened the match with a 7-3 lead before MSU fought back to take a 27-23 advantage following a Krier ace. The Pilots responded with a 7-1 run to win the game following a MSU hitting error.
In the second set it was MSU building an early 7-3 lead. MSU held onto to the lead the rest of the game, winning on a Zanto kill. In game three, the Bobcats opened with a 13-6 run after a Malyurek kill. MSU closed out the set on a Kamber Kelly and Zanto block.
In the final game of the match, Montana State opened up with a 13-8 advantage on a Malyurek kill. The Bobcats held the lead before winning on a UP hitting error.
Kamber Kelly garnered Holiday Inn Classic most valuable player honors, while teammates Malyurek and Purnell were also named to the all-tournament squad. Also named to the all-tourney team were Jamie Claussen, Boise State, Kim Fenneman, Boise State, Sheena Surplus, Portland and Lizaiha Garcia, Buffalo.
“I was very pleased with how Kamber (Kelly) led the team this weekend,” Malauulu said. “She competed on every point and was smart with her choices.”
The Bobcats will play at the Ohio State Invitational next weekend in Columbus.
