“It was a good match to open the season,” said MSU second-year head coach Miya Malauulu. “Kim had the match of her career and that will give her a lot of confidence as the season progresses. She had an all-around great match.”
Also contributing to the Montana State (1-0) attack was Megan Zanto with 16 kills and a match-high nine blocks. MSU sophomore middle blocker Angela Wiebe also had a strong outing with nine kills, a .391 attack mark and four blocks. Bobcat setter Kamber Kelly dished out 39 assists, while adding a team-high 19 digs.
The Bobcats opened the match taking a 13-3 advantage on a Zanto kill, and despite poor passing down the stretch, held its lead throughout the game, winning on a Stonehouse kill.
In game two, Montana State rallied from a 17-11 deficit to tie the score at 24-all on a Zanto winner. However, Gonzaga surged to a 29-26 lead following a Lauren Armas kill. MSU fought back to tie the game at 29-all on a Meggie Malyurek service ace. With the score tied at 30-all, a Bulldog hitting error and a Wiebe ace gave the ‘Cats the victory.
In the last stanza, MSU pulled away from a 16-12 advantage, taking a 25-13 lead on a Stonehouse kill. A Zanto and Kamber Kelly block secured the win for the Bobcats.
“We opened the match passing pretty well, but that took a dive at the end of game one and the start of game two,” Malauulu said. “Fortunately, we got our passing back later in the match.
“Our blocking was also solid, but it’s still not close to where it needs to be.”
