Bobcat Spikers Open Season at Gonzaga

The Bobcats will continue their road swing, playing in the University of Alabama Crimson Tide Invitational, Sept. 3-4 in Tuscaloosa. The ‘Cats will open tourney play on Friday against Xavier at 9 a.m., followed by the College of Charleston at 3:30 p.m. MSU concludes tourney play on Saturday against Alabama at 12:30 p.m.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS: Gonzaga finished the 2003 season with a 4-26 overall mark and a 1-13 ledger in West Coast Conference action. One if its losses was a 30-18, 30-23, 30-23 decision to MSU at the Wingate Innvitational. In the match, the ‘Cats were paced by Meggie Malyurek with 13 kills. Xavier went 16-15 last fall and finished fourth in the A-10 with an 8-6 mark. Friday will mark the first meeting between the two squads. The College of Charleston ended a storybook season with a 28-6 overall record and a 17-1 mark in the Southern Conference. The Cougars and Bobcats have met once, with MSU winning a 3-0 decision in 1995. Montana State and Alabama met for the first time last season at the MSU-Holiday Inn Classic. The ‘Cats defeated the Crimson Tide 30-17, 30-24, 30-25. MSU was paced in the victory by middle blockers Megan Zanto and Angela Wiebe with nine kills, apiece. ‘Bama went on to an 18-13 overall mark and an 11-5 SEC record.
AY’ CAPTAIN: The Montana State volleyball squad named its captains for the 2004 season. Senior LeAnn Kinvig and junior Meggie Malyurek will serve in the leadership roles this season. Kinvig, a two-year starter from Sexsmith, Alberta, Canada, averaged 1.72 kills and 2.08 digs last fall, while Malyurek, a 6-foot- junior outside hitter from Big Horn, Wyoming, averaged a team-best 3.21 kills per game and 3.26 digs per outing, last season.
