Lulay, Defense Shine in First Fall Scrimmage

Travis Lulay operated the offense efficiently and Montana State’s defense was at times dominant during Montana State’s first fall scrimmage Saturday at Bobcat Stadium.
“No surprises,” said a satisfied Mike Kramer following the unscripted 61-play tilt. “I thought both sides played at a really nice pace. There were positives on both sides of the ball.”
Lulay, Montana State’s junior quarterback who enters his third season as the team’s starter, completed four of his seven passes for 40 yards. Junior tailback Morris Milton carried 10 times for 41 yards to lead Bobcat ball carriers, while classmate Justin Domineck gained 25 yards on six carries.
“Travis played exceptionally well,” Kramer said. “He’s an outstanding player, and he really operates this offense with outstanding proficiency. I thought Morris ran well, he would be the starter at this point, and Justin is right behind him. They both did some good things, and Jimmy Beal had a nifty run on the touchdown.”
Beal, a sophomore who is playing both running back and receiver, scampered into the end zone for the day’s only score from five yards. He gained 10 yards on 10 carries, while Jason Gathing carried once for a loss of three yards. Backup quarterback Rick Coppack engineered eight of MSU’s 12 offensive series, throwing for 105 yards on 7-of-17 passing. Coppack had passes intercepted by cornerback Martin Henderson and linebacker Claude Boiteau.
The scrimmage marked the first full go of camp for MSU’s special teams, and although Kramer saw plenty of rust, he saw plenty to like, as well. “This was our first full-speed run-through on special teams,” Kramer said. “I saw exactly what I expected to see. I think we learned that Corey Smith might be as hard to replace as anyone on the football team as a return man. (Freshman) Tyler Bolton showed me that he’s a gamer. He punted real well, although he doesn’t get a lot of practice. He boomed a couple, and showed that he can serve as our emergency punter. He knocked down a 42-yard field goal in overtime to seal the win, too.”
Bolton nailed two of his three field goal attempts and his only PAT. EJ Cochrane was one-for-three on field goals and missed his PAT, while junior college transfer Travis Doroski, who is expected to handle kickoffs for the Bobcats, missed all three of his field goal attempts, nailed his only extra point try, and knocked three of his four kickoffs inside the five yard-line. Lulay punted four times, nailing two inside the 10 and averaging 38 yards while allowing no returns.
In all, Kramer was pleased with what he saw on Saturday. “It was an excellent scrimmage to end our first full week of practice,” Kramer said. “We’re following the natural progression of fall camp, we’re getting better, but there are so many things to work on that are usually cleared up by Thursday (MSU’s second scrimmage).
