Veterans Pace Bobcat Spikers in Blue-Gold Scrimmage

It was exactly what the second-year MSU volleyball coach was looking for in the team’s four-game match, Saturday morning in Shroyer Gym.
“I was happy, for the most part, that we kept within our system,” Malauulu said. “I wish we could’ve executed better, but I’m happy with the outcome. We still have some work to do before the season-opener next week.”
Senior Kamber Kelly set four games and went 3-1 for the scrimmage. The native of Roundup dished out 29 assists, while adding three aces. Junior outside hitter Meggie Malyurek led all players with 12 kills and 16 digs, while senior LeAnn Kinvig chipped in seven kills, 12 digs and six blocks.
“One of the goals heading into the season is for our outside hitters to become more consistent,” Malauulu said. “Meggie and LeAnn both had a good morning. We need them to play at a high level in each match.”
The Bobcat middle attack was paced by Angela Wiebe and Megan Zanto. Wiebe ended the scrimmage with eight kills and eight blocks, while Zanto finished with five kills and seven blocks.
“We wanted to establish our middle attack from the beginning of the scrimmage and see the sets evenly distributed between our hitters,” Malauulu said. “Kamber did a great job of moving the ball around and getting everyone involved.”
MSU opens its 2004 season at Gonzaga University on Wednesday, Sept. 1 in Spokane, Wash.
