Bobcats Open Camp

If it seems like just yesterday that a wide-eyed, red-headed freshman named Lulay began impressing Bobcat football coaches the moment he stepped on campus, it was.
On Tuesday, older brother Travis Lulay — now MSU’s starting quarterback — watched while younger brother Tyler began vying for playing time as a true freshman safety. “It’s pretty cool,” Travis said as his brother practiced with the ‘Cats for the first time on Tuesday afternoon. “He came out and ran with us the other night, and when I threw to him for the first time it seemed strange.”
Kramer is more than happy to have two red-heads in camp. “Tyler looks good,” said Kramer, presiding over his fifth fall camp as MSU’s head coach. “Travis is such an astounding leader, and Tyler has many of the same characteristics. Those are two guys that are fun to coach.”
Travis Lulay enters his third fall in the MSU program, and his second as Montana State’s starter. That experience has allowed him to step seamlessly into a leadership role. “We just keep doing the things we do to set the tone for the entire team,” he said. When (the team’s veterans) work hard, it sets an example and allows everyone to come together.”
Blake Wolf, also a two-year starter at tight end, said Lulay’s presence has a settling influence on the offense. “Travis is a phenomenal person,” Wolf said. “He’s a leader, and that’s what we need from our quarterback.”
Kramer was pleased with what he saw from his newcomers during the first practice session. “This is a very talented group of new players, and it’s supplemented by a solid group of returners that haven’t yet garnered game experience. These new guys all come with high quality experience, so there is not a sense of newness surrounding this team.”

A pair of offensive linemen dropped out of the picture for MSU as fall camp began. Rory Canfield, a junior college offensive lineman who redshirted last year with an injury, informed the Bobcat coaches he would not return. Canfield entered camp as a reserve guard. Also Patrick Farrar, a redshirt center last year, told the MSU staff he would not return to the team. He was a walk-on.In addition, prep signee Brian Williams and junior college transfer Corky Lindsay each failed to qualify academically, and won’t join the squad this fall. Williams is expected to grayshirt and arrive at MSU in January.
