“We’ve watched her win numerous state titles over the years and she is one of the great talents in the state,” Kennedy said. “I like the fact that Wasewi had demonstrated a good blend of speed and endurance. That will serve her well as she competes at the collegiate level.”
Shawl is a two-time Montana Class A state champion in the 1600-meters and captured the Class A cross country title as a freshman. This past season, rebounding from a knee injury, she finished third at the state meet in the 3200-meters and was fourth at 1600-meters. This past fall, Shawl finished fourth at the Class A cross country championships.
“Wasewi will run both cross country and track this season,” Kennedy said. “She has the potential to be among our top seven in cross country.”
Shawl has posted lifetime best marks of 5:11 in the mile; 11:41 at 3200-meters and 2:21 in the 800-meters. She plans to major in business.
With the signing of Shawl, Kennedy concludes recruiting on the women’s side. According to the 23-year veteran of Bobcat track and field, this year’s distance recruiting is the best at MSU in over a decade.
