Mataio Toilolo worked out for a pair of NFL scouts on Thursday, as teams prepare for next Tuesday's NFL Supplemental Draft.
Players who have become eligible for the NFL since last April's standard draft are chosen in the supplemental phase. Toilolo was not able to complete the academic work required to graduate from MSU by August, so he declared himself eligible for the supplemental draft. "(The supplemental draft) is for kids that thought they'd be eligible (for college football) this year, but due to unforeseen reasons aren't," said Eagles scout Anthony Patch.
Patch described the supplemental draft as a silent auction, where teams submit blind bids on a player by the round in which they would like to select that player. If they are the highest bidder (by round), the player becomes the property of that team, and the team surrenders the corresponding pick in next spring's draft.
