Montana State’s Gebicki and Olson Earn NCAA Championship Doubles Berth
When it rains its pours.
And for Montana State men’s tennis coach Mike Phillips, his amazing postseason deluge got even better on Thursday afternoon as the NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Sub-committee selected 32 doubles teams that will compete in the 2004 NCAA Tennis Championships, May 26-31 in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Among the 32 tandems picked for the NCAA Championships are Montana State’s top duo of Marek Gebicki and Braden Olson. The duo notched a 15-5 mark at the No. 1 spot this spring. Gebicki and Olson are the first Bobcats to ever gain a singles or doubles berth to the NCAA Championships.
Each region received automatic entry for two doubles teams. The other combination from the Mountain Region was Brigham Young’s Eric Nyman and Nima Roshan. Two weeks ago, Gebicki and Olson defeated the Cougars top squad 8-5 in Provo, Utah.
“Marek (Gebicki) and Braden (Olson) have proven themselves to be, perhaps, the best doubles team in the history of Montana State tennis,” said MSU head coach Mike Phillips. “Right now, they are both getting through finals week, so I don’t think it has really sunk in what this means to them and Montana State University. It’s an amazing accomplishment.”
Gebicki and Olson are the only Big Sky Conference athletes that will play in the singles or doubles draws at the NCAA Tennis Championships.
