No. 4 USC Ends Bobcats Dream Season

Fourth-ranked Southern California used its depth to end Montana State’s season with a 4-0 victory over the Bobcats in the first-round of the NCAA Tennis Championships, Saturday afternoon in Los Angeles.
“I was happy with the way we competed,” said MSU head coach Mike Phillips. “Once we settled down, the guys did a great job. Both Freddy (Ueltschi) and Marek (Gebicki) were up in their second sets, and Braden (Olson) was also playing very well.
“USC just had a little more depth,” Phillips said.
USC (20-3) opened the match winning the doubles point with victories at Nos. 1 and 3. No. 2 doubles was suspended. The Trojans then claimed Nos. 3, 5 and 6 singles to advance to second-round against Cal-Berkeley.
The Trojans entered singles play with three players ranked in the top 100 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, while Montana State (17-6) had one—Ueltschi at No. 78. USC also had two doubles tandems ranked among the top 50, as well.
“We weren’t intimated at all,” Phillips said. “USC has a great tradition, but I thought we held our own. We had a couple of break-point opportunities, but just couldn’t get over the hump.”
MSU ends its season with one of the best records in the program’s history, along with its second Big Sky title; four Big Sky Conference First-Team selections; and the league’s MVP (Ueltschi).
MSU’s top doubles tandem of Gebicki and Olson will compete in the NCAA doubles championship next weekend in Tulsa, Okla.
