Bobcat Netters Prepare for USC

The NCAA Championships:
For the second time in Montana State history the Bobcat men’s tennis team will play in the NCAA Championships. MSU earned the Big Sky’s automatic bid with a 4-3 decision over Idaho State on May 1. The Bobcats will face No. 4 University of Southern California, Saturday, May 15 at 1 p.m. (MST) at Marks Tennis Stadium on the USC Campus. The other first-round pairing matches San Diego vs. California. The winners will meet in the second-round on Sunday, May 16 at 1 p.m.
Terriffic Tandem:
For the first time in Montana State history the Bobcats will send a doubles team to the NCAA Championships. Junior Braden Olson and sophomore Marek Gebicki earned one of two automatic berths from the Mountain Region. Only 32 doubles teams are invited to the NCAA Championships. As MSU’s top duo, Olson and Gebicki notched a 15-5 overall mark. The NCAA Doubles Championship will be May 26-31 at the University of Tulsa.
The Big Sky’s Best:
The Bobcats won their second Big Sky title in the last five years with a 4-3 decision over Idaho State on May 1. The Bengals captured the doubles point, before MSU won at Nos. 1, 2 and 3 singles. ISU won at Nos. 5 and 6 to even the match. Montana State senior captain and Missoula native Braden Olson then won a hard-fought 7-6, 7-6 decision to give the Bobcats the Big Sky title. MSU advanced to the title match with a 4-0 win over No. Arizona.
Nothing But Accolades:
A record four Bobcat players garnered All-Big Sky Conference First-Team honors. Earning the accolades were MSU’s top four on the ladder: #1 Federico Ueltschi, #2 Marek Gebicki, #3 Tejeshwara Chigateri, #4 Braden Olson. In addition, Ueltschi became the first MSU player ever named Big Sky Conference Most Valuable Player.
Coach of the Year:
Montana State head coach Mike Phillips was named Big Sky Conference Coach of the Year, in a vote by the league coaches last week. The honor was Phillips’ second in the past three seasons. He is 54-36 in four years at MSU.
The Last Dance:
Montana State has been to only one other NCAA Championship in the history of the program. The 2000 squad faced Texas in the first-round and dropped a 4-0 decision to the Longhorns. UT was ranked No. 15 at the time. The Bobcats were paced during the 2000 season by current assistant coach Lukasz Mazur. MSU finished the 2000 campaign with a 12-11 record.
