Bobcat Women Win 8th Straight

The beat goes on for the Montana State women and the Montana men. Each team extended winning streaks on Saturday afternoon at the Bobcat Track and Field Complex in Bozeman.
Montana State's women's team beat the Grizzlies 105-98, their eighth straight win in a series that once belonged exclusively to Montana. The Grizzly men won 105-94 to win for the third straight time over MSU. "I thought four college track teams showed up today and really competed hard," said MSU coach Dale Kennedy. "We got a little closer to them on the men's side (that in the teams' previous dual in early April in Missoula), and the hay wasn't in the barn on the women's dual until we went one-two in the hammer."
MSU's throwers ruled the day, as has become customary. Bobcat junior Leif Arthun had the day's big mark, a throw of 219-4 in the javelin throw, a season's best by 20 feet, a meet record, and an NCAA Midwest Regional qualifying mark. "Leif had a huge throw, and I thought that really set the tone for the day," Kennedy said. "Then Kim Berg stepped up in the (women's) javelin and hit a regional mark, and we got rolling."
Senior Jen Allen from Billings, in her final home meet, won the women's discus (150-1), shot put (47-9), and hammer throw (199-6). Her hammer mark was a meet record and extended her school record and regional qualifying mark. Allen's counterpart on the men's squad, Blake Jackson, who was also competing in his home finale, won the hammer throw (191-6) and shot put (59-2.25). "I so much wanted Jen and Blake to finish their home careers on a positive note," Kennedy said. "The way they've dominated this conference during their careers, that was appropriate." Brad Sherer also posted a regional qualifying mark of 183-3.
Bobcat freshman Kelsey Kirkpatrick had a spectacular day, winning the long jump (18-6.5) and triple jump (39-6) and finishing second in the 100 hurdles (15.12). Each mark was a career best. "Kelsey is really having an outstanding freshman season," Kennedy said. "She's improving at a rapid pace and really had a major impact on our win today."
Kennedy was quick to credit his coaching staff with his team's outstanding performances. "(Throws coach) Mike Carignan, Lacy Hinzpeter (sprints), and Tom Eitel (jumps) have done an outstanding job with their young people," Kennedy said. "They are tireless workers who get so much out of their kids. Jorah Roylance works with the javelin throwers, and the performance of those kids today is a credit to her."
Kennedy is pleased with where his team stands two weeks before the Big Sky Conference Championships. "I think we're arriving at the Big Sky Conference meet at the right time in terms of our team's performances. We had a lot of outstanding performances today, and I think when you add them up we'll have a lot of season's bests and career bests. It's an inexact science, but we're still going in the right direction."
