MSU’s Braden Olson (Missoula) defeated Marc Pijoan 7-6 (9-7), 7-6 (7-5) at No. 4 singles to clinch the match for the Bobcats. At No. 6 singles Jemre Okoh of Idaho State topped Jake Berriochoa 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 to tie the match at 3-3 before Olson won it for MSU.
“I couldn’t be anymore happier for the guys,” said MSU men’s tennis coach Mike Phillips. “They really dedicated themselves to winning the Big Sky championship this season and they kept their focus throughout the entire season and really became close as a team.
“Everyone played with a lot of heart in the championship match,” Phillips added. “Idaho State is an awesome team and it was a tremendous match. Braden (Olson) really came through. He has been the rock of this squad the past three years. It’s fantastic that it came down to our captain and a kid from Montana to get the job done.”
With the victory Montana State will represent the Big Sky at the NCAA Regionals, May 14-16 at 16 different campus sites. The finals of the NCAA Championship will be May 22-31 in Tulsa, Okla. MSU will find out who it plays on Wednesday, May 5 as the NCAA selection show will be broadcast on ESPNews at 2:45 p.m. (MST).
The Bobcats will enter the tournament with an overall record of 17-5.
Along with Olson, also winning singles matches for Montana State were Federico Ueltschi at No. 1, Marek Gebicki at No. 2 and Tej Chigateri at No. 3. Ueltschi defeated Hestian Stoica 6-2, 6-2, Gebicki defeated Butch Stavridis 6-1, 6-4 and Chigateri defeated Ivan Moferdin 6-3, 6-3.
The championship match was played at the Weber State tennis courts in Ogden. For Idaho State Pablo Garces won the No. 5 singles match 6-2, 6-3 over MSU’s Adam Stutts. The third-seeded Bengals, who upset second-seeded Sacramento State in the semifinals, finish the season 13-8 overall.
