Bobcats Face League Rivals in Missoula

Montana State heads to Missoula for the Al Manuel Dual Meet Invitational on Saturday. The Bobcats face Montana, Idaho State, and Eastern Washington, what at one time was considered the Big Sky’s Northern Division. The event will be scored as duals between all teams involved. The Bobcats and Grizzlies will decide their annual battle for braggning rights head-to-head on May 1.

Montana State will face its closest geographical rivals this weekend at the Al Manuel Dual Meet Invitational in Missoula’s Dornblaser Stadium. MSU will square off in dual meets against Eastern Washington, Idaho State, and Montana. The meet will be scored by international rules, with only two individuals scoring per event on a 5-3-2-1 basis.
Peak Performers
It didn’t take Jen Allen and Casey Jermyn long to get heated up during the outdoor season. In MSU’s seaosn-opening weekend, Jermyn and Allen were named Big Sky Athletes of the Week. Jermyn registered the fourth-fastest 10,000m time in the nation to this point, 29:35.52, an NCAA Provisional Qualifying mark. Allen hit the NCAA regional marks in the shot put, 46-11.75, and the hammer throw, 182-7, and also moved to the front of the Big Sky list in the discus.
Personnel Palaver
One high-profile Bobcat, distance runner Kevin Clary, will miss the weekend with a knee injury. Sprinter Ross Engle, pole vaulter Thomas Seely, and women’s sprinter Torey Shaefer are also out with injuries. Erin Jones, a Big Sky champion during the indoor season, will redshirt this season due to a shoulder injury. Throwers Josh Henigman, Lisa Lord, Kelli Phillip and Megan Lee will all redshirt, along with distance runners Caleb Ambrose and Jonathan Gibson.
League Leaders
Casey Jermyn holds the top spot on the 10,000m list, and is also 25th in the nation. Ed Keefe is first in the pole vault with a leap of 16-0.75. An MSU women’s team competitor holds first in each of the four throwing events. Jen Allen is first in the discus with a mark of 151-8, and is first in the shot (46-11.75) and hammer (182-7) with NCAA Regional Qualifying standards. Amanda Emslie is first in the javelin with a mark of 139-0.

“We look forward to this weekend, this has become a good tradition over the past 10 or 12 years. I enjoy team competition in track and field and believe it’s good for track and field to emphasize the team scoring element. Our nation’s athletic culture is geared toward team competition, and this is a way for us to capitalize on that. That said, we’re going to have trouble this weekend. There are several events on the men’s side that we will either leave uncovered, or have only one entry. In this scoring format, it’s very, very difficult to win a dual when you have events without entries. We saw in the Big Sky indoor meet that Idaho State is a very solid team, and I think they are even a better dual meet team than a conference meet team. Montana and Eastern are also very good teams, maybe more well-suited for duals than for conference meets. We’re better suited for a large meet because we have great depth in a few event groups rather than decent depth across the board. To win any of these duals we’ll have to put together some one-two finishes, and I just don’t see a lot of one-twos out there. We’ll need our sprinters and jumpers to step up and provide support for our throwers.”

Dale Kennedy is in his 25th year as MSU’s women’s coach, his third as coach of the combined program... was Big Sky Coach of the Year for the 2001 indoor and ‘03 outdoor seasons... has led MSU to two women’s cross country titles this decade, and has led the Lady Cats to three conference track titles and a pair of runnerup finishes... has produced five All-Americas and 17 NCAA qualifiers.

In his 22nd year at MSU... has coached 45 athletes to all-Big Sky honors... MSU’s throwers led the Big Sky in points in 2002 and ‘03... MSU became the first Big Sky school in history to hold the top five spots in one event during the 2004 Big Sky Indoor women’s shot put competition.
